Announcing SlutWalk Detroit 2012!
SlutWalk Detroit will take place on June 16th, 2012, beginning with a rally in Grand Circus Park at 2 pm. Much more information will be available as all the details get sorted out! In the meantime, mark your calendars and RSVP on facebook (and spread the word to your friends!).
As we gear up to promote our event, we’d like to remind everyone what SlutWalk is all about. The purpose of SlutWalk is to put an end to the blaming, shaming, and torment that’s aimed at victims of sexual violence. From bullying in the halls of high schools to interrogations in the courtroom and accusations from the media, victims of sexual violence are often subjected to further traumas for daring to speak out; it is not difficult to see why rape is the most under-reported crime in the U.S. and many other places around the world. And a culture which silences the voices of victims is a culture in which sexual violence is allowed to continue unchecked. SlutWalk was created to teach society that there is no such thing as “asking” to be a victim of sexual violence, no matter what you’re wearing, how much you’ve had to drink, or how many sexual partners you’ve had in the past.
We welcome all expressions of (consensual!) sexuality at SlutWalk Detroit, but wish to stress that the core value of SlutWalk is to fight victim-blaming, and to question what it means to be labeled as a “slut” in the first place in a society where all women are viewed as potential sluts. Wear a miniskirt, wear your pajamas… either way, the message is the same!
SlutWalk Detroit is deeply committed to being a LGBTQ-inclusive and racially diverse event. Please respect one another!
Stay tuned here and on facebook for more information! We’ll see you all in June!
